What is reflections?
Each year hundreds of thousands of students in preschool through grade 12 create and submit original works in the areas of dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography and visual arts. Students may participate in the national awards program through their school's PTA.
The 2018-2019 theme "Heroes Around Me" will spark imagination and creativity in school and at home. Encourage your school to imagine, create and celebrate with Reflections during National Arts & Humanities Month this October.
The Reflections program is open to all Texas students who meet the necessary requirements below:
Schools Supported by a Local PTA/PTSA:

The Reflections program is open to all Texas students who meet the necessary requirements below:
Schools Supported by a Local PTA/PTSA:
- Students must attend a school with a Local PTA/PTSA that achieves Active Status no later than October 31, or students must attend a school which is defined within the service area of a community-based Local PTA/PTSA which achieves Active Status no later than October 31; and
- The student or at least one person from their primary household must be a current member of the Local PTA/PTSA where the student is participating. Each Local PTA/PTSA may determine a date by which the member must join.

Reflections has encouraged millions of students to express themselves by giving positive recognition for their artistic efforts. Students in preschool through grade 12 may create and submit works of art in six categories: dance choreography, film production, literature, musical composition, photography, and visual arts.

Reflections Program Timeline Student Entry Deadline at the Local level: Local PTAs (individual schools) set their own due date to receive student entries. Most Local PTAs set their deadline near the end of October. Texas PTA encourages Local PTAs to contact their Council PTA or Regional Coordinator (if your Local PTA is not a member of a Council PTA) prior to determining the student entry deadline.
Advancing Entry Deadline at the Council/Regional level: Council PTAs and/or Regional Coordinators set their own due date to receive entries advancing from the Local PTAs. Due dates are typically set for late November or early December.
Advancing Entries to Texas PTA: Entries advancing to Texas PTA from the Council or Regional Coordinators must be received by 5:00 pm on January 15th. If the 15th falls on a weekend or a federal holiday, the acceptance date will extend to the following business day.
Advancing Entries to National PTA: Texas PTA advances selected entries no later than March 1.

Step One: Identify and recruit judges for your program. Remember that it's best to have judges who are not closely affiliated with your campus.
Step Two: Verify eligibility of all entries received, including National PTA arts category rules and Texas PTA membership requirements. It's important to be pro-active in working with families to resolve any eligibility concerns prior to judging.
Step Three: Host your Reflections judging. Guidelines and suggested Scorecards are available for download.
Step Four: Download and complete the Advancing Entry Spreadsheet.
Step Five: Complete the Local PTA Participation Summary or Regional/Council Participation Summary.
Step Six: Advance entries to next round of judging by the published deadline.

About National Awards and Prizes Each year, Over 1,000 student submissions are reviewed at the national level by arts and education experts. Our judges look for personal interpretations on the program theme that best exemplify creativity and technical skill.
